Charnwood Borough Council Chooses Managed Security from Network Box

Organisation Immediately Relieves Burden Of Maintenance And Administration

17 July 2008 - Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) has chosen managed security company, Network Box, to protect it from all online threats. CBC will be using Network Box’s unified threat management product, which will secure the organisation’s network and provide it with a firewall and email and web filtering.

CBC has around 750 employees working in six different offices. The organisation is heavily reliant on email and the internet for internal communications, and also for liaising externally with the public, partners and other third parties. It sends and receives approximately 27,500 emails every week.

Previously, the organisation was using a variety of security solutions to thwart internet threats but found them cost-ineffective and the necessary maintenance and administration a drain on resources.

Christian Turner, IT Security Officer, Charnwood Borough Council, comments: “We rely heavily on email and the internet for our communications, so it was essential that we had the appropriate level of protection in place to ensure these channels were protected and remained open. However, we also needed to streamline our infrastructure and lighten the administrative load.”

CBC turned to Network Box because it provides unified threat management (UTM) via a managed service, meaning it secures private networks, protects against all online threats and, crucially, requires negligible administration.

“We chose Network Box because it provides all our security needs in one piece of hardware. And because it’s a managed service, our IT staff no longer have to spend valuable time each day ensuring each security solution is maintained and up to date, which allows them to concentrate on other projects that directly benefit the organisation. From the Council’s perspective, this time saving translates directly in to increased productivity,” says Turner.

After managing a variety of solutions for so long, outsourcing its security to experts has been a relief for CBC. “The level of support and service that we’ve received has far exceeded expectations”, says Turner. “Previously, we simply didn’t have the experience or the time to manage all the emails, the web filtering and firewall in-house. It’s reassuring to know that by using Network Box, our security is being managed by a team of highly skilled and experienced professionals.”

Turner believes that switching to Network Box will prove a shrewd investment. “The cost of using Network Box for all our security needs is already significantly less than using separate solutions to do the same job. But it’s not just in the cost of the actual product where we anticipate savings. Because we don’t have to worry about maintenance and updates, we expect to recoup hundreds of man hours every year, which equates to a four-figure sum.”
